GenCon preparations

This year’s GenCon will be a different experience for me than last year. GenCon 2006 was my first, and while I did a couple signings for Maiden of Pain, I was there primarily as an attendee, and I participated in a lot of events.

GenCon 2007 will be a “working” weekend for me. I’ll be running 2 four-hour gaming sessions of the DCC adventure I wrote for Goodman Games on Friday and Saturday. I’m also doing a one-hour signing session with another DCC #46: The Book of Treasure Maps author on Friday before my first gaming session. I fly in to Indianapolis Thursday evening and fly out on Sunday morning. I didn’t sign up for any other events (my apologies to Eric for leaving the True Dungeon crew without their quick and self-promoting rogue) so I could have some time to socialize with folks I haven’t seen since last GenCon.

Over the next three days, I’ll be putting together everything I need to run The Temple’s Tributes. I’m taking inventory of the minis I need and will make a run to the LGS to fill holes. I also need to create some pregenerated characters. Some possible combinations I’ve thought of so far include:

  • a dwarf fighter
  • a dwarf wizard
  • an elven ranger (archery)
  • an elven rogue
  • a half-elf druid
  • a half-elf sorcerer
  • a half-orc barbarian
  • a halfling cleric
  • a halfling rogue
  • a human paladin
  • a human cleric

The dwarf wizard is a nod to Ed Gentry’s character from our Red Hand of Doom game last year. Clerics are important, as the undead are featured heavily, and a rogue will be useful once the party makes it into the temple, so I decided to have two of each class available. And the lack of gnomes and bards was intentional. I have a personal dislike of them.

I plan to make a version of each character at the high and low ends of the adventure’s level range (3-5). I may dual-class some of the 5th level versions. I might give one or two of them evil alignments, but not enough to allow for an entire evil party.

My schedule of events is listed below. It appears GenCon bumped my first sessions on Friday and Saturday from Noon to 2pm. While all the gaming sessions are sold out (I set the limit to 4), I am going to allow a couple pick-up slots for folks with generic tickets. Those two slots for the first session on Friday are already taken by Ed Gentry.

Take lots of notes and post a report (and pictures) for those of us stuck at home. ;)

And check out the Dark Sword Miniatures booth. They’re making miniatures for Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire. :) They look so nice, I may start painting these things again, assuming the last fifteen years of drinking coffee all day hasn’t shot my painting hand….
