This was a really good post. Interesting to read about your system. In the last campaign I ran what I did was to take a map of Greece and the islands, turn it upside down, and then draw in the different regions - worked quite well! There are also some map-gen tools out there on the Internet, I have tried a few, but they are not very good IMO - and not as fun!
One other tip: don't let your players see the whole world at once! Give it to 'em a little bit at a time - that way you don't have to do all the work at the start, and yo can change things up to work with here the story is going!

@Lukahn: That's what trackbacks are for. ;) If you use the trackback link, it automatically creates a comment using an excerpt from your blog post.

@Cole: I often find myself using the miles/day travel distance tables in the DMG to create the appropriate scale for the settings I use in my stories.

Using a published campaign, it is easier to mark the distance between towns. That is exactly what I have been doing for my current campaign. That approach, like you said, helps the players plan their future steps, making it easier for them to immerse themselves into the world.

Cole's last blog post was The Careorraent Keep

My response got pretty long, so I moved it over to my blog page so as not to overwhelm the comment discussion with a post as long as your blog post. :)
