My inner editor is pretty controlling but during the creative phase I maintain about 25% of my concentration on holding it back. In fact, there have been times where I stop, momentarily, searching for the perfect word -- but override that editor's voice by inserting my general thought into brackets and motoring along. My general feeling is that I can "activate" my inner editor with absolutely no effort. Creativity, on the other hand, is much more elusive and difficult to harness. Look at it funny and it goes away. :)

My inner editor is entirely in control. Note I said "IN" control, not "UNDER" control. He's a word-slashing, sentence-rearranging, paragraph-tweaking, page-scrutinizing, scene-cutting-an-pasting S.O.B.! It's love-hate all the way. If you ever get wind of that shock collar technology, please, please, please blog it to the rest of us wretched bond servants to our pens and s-words! I'm dying over here.

Not only do I keep my inner editor on a short leash, I've clubbed him and thrown him in the stocks.

I refuse to agonize over the right word choice, or word repetitions, or anything I consider to be a "small" issue (i.e., one that ultimately doesn't affect the story). If I can't fix it in thirty seconds, I keep moving. Only when the story (or the chapter) is finished, from beginning to end, will I go back to make those small edits.

It's something I've forced myself to do. Otherwise, my inner editor turns me into a completely unproductive writer.
